Chapter 14: The Beliefs of the Knights Templar

The comparison between the impressive achievements of the Templars in their 180-year history and those of other orders, which were established long before them and who outlasted them by many centuries, is surprising. Still, the apparent lines of inquiry that could explain these differences are ignored or brushed under the academic carpet as irrelevant. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Templars were suppressed, disgracefully, following a controversial trial for heresy conducted by the French Inquisition at the behest of King Philippe le Bel of France. Their internal records were either stolen by the Inquisitors; hidden by the knights for safekeeping; or destroyed. This lack of information has had two detrimental effects: giving free reign to speculation, and providing academic historians with an excuse for ignoring the real cause of the Templars’ immense growth.

The obvious information vacuum is not quite complete, as it may seem. In fact, the Templars have left us with a considerable legacy that can be used as a guide to their true beliefs. This exists with their involvement with a form of veneration that is almost perpetually associated with Templar activity—namely the Black Madonna. Other clues to their beliefs can be found hidden, although in allegorical form, within another example of Rex Deus activity that originated in the city of Troyes—a literary work still fascinates millions of people today, The Search for the Holy Grail. The Templars also left us a memorable guide to their main principles of belief, carved as three-dimensional teaching boards in the great Gothic cathedrals they built or financed during the explosion of creativity that one perceptive British author, William Anderson, called The Rise of the Gothic.

The Cult of the Black Madonna

With its true origins rooted in pagan worship of a variety of mother goddesses, the cult of Mariolatry received its main impetus from Chartres. For instance, Notre Dame Sous-Terre at Chartres Cathedral is a Christianized variation on the Ancient Druidic practice worshipping the fire-blackened figure of a virgin about to give birth, Virginibus pariturae, described by Julius Caesar in de Bello Gallico, book 4. There are many such assimilations occurring throughout Europe, which retained older pagan forms of worship and incorporated them into Catholic practice.

The veneration of the Black Madonna began in a similar fashion. Several important Black Madonna sites either predate the foundation of the Templar order or, are located geographically far beyond their reach. The peak years of this strange cult, however, coincide with the time of the order’s power, and the majority of the effigies are located in areas of Templar influence. Moreover, the cult is intimately enmeshed with veneration of Mary Magdalene. While it has always been happy to rake in the financial benefits of pilgrimage to these sites, the Catholic Church has consistently felt uncomfortable with the cult of the Black Madonna. As Mariolatry plays such an important role in the Catholic faith, this obvious discomfort with the intense local, national, and sometimes international, veneration of Black Madonna seems difficult to understand.
